Peter was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, a few kilometres from the Welsh border, because there was no Welsh maternity unit close to his parents’ home in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Peter was brought up in Prestatyn and went to Rhyl grammar school. He took up birdwatching, influenced by Edmund Sandars’ A Bird Book for the Pocket.
